A heart metaphor suggests unity and integration, but IIT uses a specific causal criterion for integration. One source feeding many outputs need not form an irreducible whole in IIT’s sense. The comparison develops this distinction through a worked example and explains its implications for SMM/DTT’s nested generation, completed records and account of the observable world.
The Cosmic Heart is most illuminating as a symbol of concentrated unity that communicates life and intelligibility to a differentiated world. In SMM it belongs to a metaphysical account of the Single Monad and continuous creation. A responsible interpretation preserves the symbol’s philosophical force while asking what, if anything, can be translated into a formal source model. The heart need not denote an organ at the center of physical space. A nonspatial source has no geographic center from which a signal travels outward.
Three claims can be separated. The world depends on one source; the source produces organized relations; and those relations sustain distinct experiences. Each is stronger than a picture of a central node with arrows to everything else. A network node is already located within an assumed graph. The Single Monad is proposed as prior to that relational articulation. A mathematical representation must therefore explain why the diagram is a representation of source dependence rather than a literal map of the cosmos. This is especially relevant when physical and psychical meanings of heart appear together.
The six nested inner levels offer a way to give the symbol explanatory articulation. A later capacity is grounded in earlier generative capacities, and outer completion makes their joint result accessible. The meaningful question is what structure this dependency constrains. Does it explain a shared conservation law, a common mode of individuation or the unity of an experienced scene? These are different possible achievements. Treating all of them as automatic consequences of one source would hide the very relations the model is meant to illuminate.
SMM begins with one nonspatial generative source. DTT distinguishes its inner production from the outer order in which completed results become accessible. The six inner levels are nested functional dependencies within that production; the seventh denotes outer completion. They are not six independent clocks, six spatial directions, or six simultaneously occupied temporal axes. This distinction makes the framework more specific than a general claim that everything changes: it asks how a world of persistent relations can be generated before its spatial representation is taken for granted. [2]
IIT proposes that experience corresponds to an intrinsic, irreducible cause-effect structure. Its formal analysis concerns a specified system, its state and counterfactual transitions under a chosen modelling scale. It should not be reduced to the claim that more stored bits mean more consciousness. Integration, information and the identification of a subject are separate requirements within the programme.
Consider two independent memory banks storing the same file. Their data agree, but agreement is not the same as an integrated causal organization. Connecting them through reciprocal operations changes the causal model even if the visible file remains the same. This distinction is useful for SMM/DTT: a common source or a completed archive need not constitute one conscious subject. A bridge to IIT would require a transition structure and an account of system boundaries, then a reason to accept IIT’s proposed identity with experience. The mathematical calculation and that identity claim should remain distinguishable. [1]
A heart metaphor suggests unity and integration, but IIT uses a specific causal criterion for integration. One source feeding many outputs need not form an irreducible whole in IIT’s sense. A purely one-way broadcast can distribute information without creating the reciprocal cause-effect organization relevant to the theory. This is a precise reason to distinguish the Cosmic Heart from a measured consciousness mechanism.
DTT can nevertheless benefit from the comparison. If the source’s nested operations generate interacting subsystems, their causal boundaries and counterfactual dependencies can be analyzed. The result could show why some local organization is integrated while another is merely coordinated by a common input. That would give the symbol a disciplined formal counterpart. It would not demonstrate that the entire source is one conscious subject. The positive lesson is to separate common origin, reciprocal integration and phenomenal unity. SMM’s Cosmic Heart can motivate an account encompassing all three, while IIT makes clear that each requires its own argument and that a central node in a diagram is not enough. [1]
Compare a fountain, a musical score and a constitution. A fountain is a spatial source of material flow. A score is a common structure that can support many performances without sending material into them. A constitution is a system of rules that organizes institutions through interpretation and action. Each is called a source, but each explains a different dependence. The Cosmic Heart should not inherit the physics of a pump simply because the word heart suggests circulation. SMM/DTT can instead clarify whether its source relation resembles production, formal constraint or sustaining ontological dependence, and which aspects go beyond all three analogies.
This approach strengthens the metaphor by making its contribution explicit. A symbol can unite cosmology, self-understanding and spiritual orientation without masquerading as a measured force. A formal theory can then borrow a precise relation from that symbolism—such as common generation or nested dependence—and give it mathematical content. Comparisons with monism and consciousness theories are most useful when they respect both levels: the metaphysical meaning of the Cosmic Heart and the separate requirements of a physical model.
THE SAME QUESTION, DIFFERENT STARTING POINTS
| Question | SMM/DTT | Integrated information theory |
|---|---|---|
| Explanatory starting point | The Cosmic Heart expresses a unified sustaining source of manifestation rather than a spatial organ pumping material through a pre-existing universe. | A specified substrate is analyzed through intrinsic, irreducible cause-effect organization. |
| Key distinction | Its explanatory relation must distinguish production, formal organization and ontological dependence before any physical mechanism is inferred. | A heart metaphor suggests unity and integration, but IIT uses a specific causal criterion for integration. |
